My write-up

Super Prom 2000. SP2K!! Where to begin.....

Well, I guess it started at the end of SP99. Apparently as people were leaving Brad said to them, "See you next year... At SP2K!!" And once I got wind of it, well there was no way Super Prom 7 would be called anything else.

So, Super Prom planning officially began at the day after Thanksgiving meeting, as per usual, and actually I had started thinking about things in mid October. Super Prom planning is always well-documented in my notebook, so view that. It gives a good idea of the craziness that is Super Prom planning.

So, the big day finally came, and we were not quite as ready as we should have been. The crowns got finished in the wee hours of the morning before SP2K, as well as the certificates and prizes. And I didn't even start burning the CDs that played at Super Prom until about 2:00 AM. And since I spent hours the day before Super Prom mulching, along with some help with Greg and later by Jim, I was physically exhausted when I woke up Super Prom morning.

The day of Super Prom preparations went as usual - mass chaos. Running constantly, though I managed to avoid hitting myself in the head this year. Mostly shouting, "Where's Greg, why the hell isn't there a trampoline in my backyard, someone get the floats blown up, where the fuck is Dave, where are the cigarettes, shit - we need to get the rock fountain in the pool, Jim - get the beer!, where the fuck is Dave, you people get the puzzle together, Da Da Da Da HEY! da da da da da, where's the damned Slip N Slide, clean up the deck, Shawn - don't ruin anything, which is farther away - San Fransisco or LA, where the fuck is Dave, get the trampoline here now, my backyard is covered with poop!!!

Well, everything worked out in the end. I got the CDs burnt just in time, so Lust for Life was ready to play. Also, Shawn made me a 3 egg omelette, which helped me out tremendously. And eventually, as is inevitable, 4 PM rolled around.

Kick off was brilliant. I counted down, everyone was excited with crazy anticipation, I dove in, and when my head emerged from the water, Lust For Life was playing, Floating Rock Fountain was fountaining, and there was a crazy party going on.

So, there were a number of things on the agenda, including a Diving Contest, Stomp Rocket Contest, Supromolympics, Chicken Limbo, and a number of other awards we had to decide on, including the Fat contest, which we had originally planned to have judges and a formal contest for. But once Super Prom began I just wanted to hang out and drink, and didn't really feel like running any contests.

But Greg, as is his job, eventually made me tend to my duties. So we were going to start the diving contest. But Matt Morgan bitched and bitched and bitched, saying that he didn't want to do the diving contest yet. So I decided to have the Stomp Rocket contest first instead, since Matt Morgan in unreasonably loud and impossible to negotiate with. So, I got everyone to line up over in the stomp rocket corner of the yard, and prepared to demonstrate how to properly propell a stomp rocket.

My first attempt failed dramatically, as my rocket hit a tree 3 feet from the pad. I felt devastated, having wasted my only attempt. But the crowd felt pity on me and allowed me a second try. I carefully lined my rocket up on the pad, making sure to avoid all obstacles. Once ready I put all effort into my jump, giving the rocket maximum propulsion with all of my mass.

And I watched it hit the same tree.

Well, the others stomped, and in the end Dave McNell was victorious. He got the rocket almost as far as possible without going out of bounds. Very impressive.

One contest down, many to go. Next up was the Supromolympics. This was new, and I was quite proud of the crazy relay race that I had dreamed up. There were 5 parts, with 7 team members required. In the first round 2 teams competed at a time. First was a race with one person on Fun Island, and the other on Fantasy Island. And they were both blindfolded. Once they reached the end of the pool (smacking into it because they couldn't see), the next person had to chug a beer, walk a straight line by the end of the pool, then stand on one foot and say the alphabet backwards. When they got to A the 4 legged race began, which consisted of 3 people tied together running down the yard behind the deck. Next person had to run through a course that included crawling through 4 hoops. Then the last person had to spin around a crouquet mallot 10 times, hit a crouquet ball through half the crouquet course, then spin 10 more times and finish the course.

So first I demonstrated the entire course for everyone, and after I spun around the crouquet mallot I didn't know where I was. So I can say that part was very hard. Then the teams went, the spectators spectated, and I was ref. It was crazy! Especially because Annie would always get in the way during the crouquet part, and dizzy people kept tripping over her.

So there were 6 teams, and the 3 winners from the first round all went at once. We didn't have enough blindfolds so in that round they got to see on the islands (someone was actually on the hippo, since there's only 2 islands). The final round was a fierce battle, but only one team can win. Winners were Kristi on the Island, Taylor on the backwards alphabet (I think Taylor had spent the week before Super Prom practicing, during the first round she was against Jimmy Big Head who had a complete mental breakdown because she was going so fast), Heather, Leah, and Sara in the 4 legged race, Erin running the hoops, and finally Brian Kelley came through by winning the crouquet spin race.

So by then we were able to convince Matt Morgan that we should have the diving contest, meanwhile I think my Pop started grilling. Taylor, Melissa, and Shawn were diving judges, and they didn't give very many points for my attempt. Once again it came down to Matt Morgan and Jim, and once again Matt Morgan won. Jim still hasn't stopped bitching.

Then we ate! Dinner as always was cheeseburgers and more cheeseburgers. I believe there was also hot dogs, potato salad, pasta salad, and other things that go well with cheeseburgers. While we ate I passed around ballots for the King and Queen.

Then the committee had some work to do. My parents took care of counting the King and Queen ballots, since they won the year before. But we had to decide on a number of other Supromlatives - Rookie of the Year, Chairman of the Year, Comeback award, Fattest, and some others. It didn't take us too long, I had made up my mind weeks earlier.

Then there was some trouble. The theme countdown started - where we play all the old themes. After "Eternal Flame" - the first Super Prom theme is played, the awards cemerony begins. While the theme from SP98 - "99 Red Balloons" - was playing, I started dancing on the diving board, with a cigarette in my mouth and a beer in my hand. Then Taylor decided to sneak up behind me and push me in. This is where I pulled off one of the greatest feats of my life. I realized I was falling, and there was no way I wasn't going into the pool. But I knew I couldn't get my beer or my smoke in the pool. So I threw my beer over to the deck, put my right hand up and with my left arm cut into the water so I wouldn't go too deep. All this in a split second. When my head came above water I swam to the side of the pool and finished my dry cigarette. It was impressive.

But, although my smoke survived the ordeal my glasses got knocked off and were at the bottom of the pool. And it was dark and the pool had gotten really dirty, so it was impossible to see them. I tried to dive to the bottom and search around for them, but to no avail. I was getting worried, because the next song was going to be "Sweet Child 'O Mine" (SP97), and then Eternal Flame (because we have dissavowed the themes from 96 and 95). So I was getting worried about this glasses situation interfering with enjoying Eternal Flame. You have to understand that listening to Eternal Flame is one of my favorite parts of Super Prom, it's a moment of peace when I get to reflect on Super Proms past.

But when "99 Red Balloons" finished up a strange thing happened. "Today" started playing. Apparently I had messed up when I made the CDs, which was now a surprise save. So during "Today" I kept looking for them but failed. Then Sweet Child 'O Mine finally started, and I got out of the pool so I could enjoy the greatest song ever written. But others kept looking, and Joe finally found them. Once I got them I ran in to change, (did I mention I was fully clothed and wearing shoes when Taylor pushed me in). I was very upset that I was going to miss Eternal Flame. But after I changed Greg told me that Dave had stopped the CD when he saw I left. So I credit Dave with saving my Super Prom experience. Then we made final preparations for the awards, and my parents had finished counting King and Queen votes. So we all went outside, and listened to Eternal Flame. Yai.

Then the Awards Ceremony began. First I dedictated SP2K to Sam, who had died that year. Somehow I managed not to totally break down to tears, though I came close. Then the usual round of thanks. Then the awards went out. Rookie of the Year, which was a new award, went to Elizabeth Nasby, although I didn't even meet her until 2 years later. The Comeback award went to Jen Norris, who didn't go to Super Prom 99 because we ostracized her. Jim got Most Improved because this was the first year he came without his fat. Chairman of the Year went to Suzie B for getting all the food. Brian beat Matt Morgan for the Fattest Award - with just a slightly larger belly. We gave Brian the tiny t-shirt, and he looked very funny in it. But then I had a little surprise. Right after declaring Brian the winner I then said, "Now it's time for the Fattest award, which goes to Matt Morgan," and pulled out another tiny t-shirt. This confused everyone, until they saw the second t-shirt and realized I actually was saying Phattest. So Matt put that one on, and he and Brian stood next to each other and we all laughed at them.

After all the awards I stepped to the side and my parents came up in their 99 crowns to crown the new King and Queen. I waited in nervous anticipation, because being Super Prom King has always been my number one goal in life, and this year I finally had a girlfriend, so I knew I might win. Or I should say I knew I would almost definitely win. And when they finally announced Me and Melissa the winner, I was completely overjoyed. Dave and Kristen had made the hugest Super Prom Crowns ever, I had a Gigantic Chicken Taco Crown, and Melissa had a Gigantic Chicken Crown. Then we had to put paper bags on our heads and jump in the pool, which Melissa wasn't too keen on. But we did, though it wasn't really a dive like it should be. The Theme "Rush" played, I was in the pool with my girl, and my life was perfect.

So once again I was in the pool fully clothed, and after a bit we went in to change. So now it was outfit number 3 for me. Then back outside for more Super Prom. After the awards ceromony I don't have too much running Super Prom type responsibilites, so at this point I could relax. Drink, hang out in the gazebo, listen to the music, hang out over on the trampoline, and oh look, a basket of cigarettes, I think I'll have one. Nothing really significant going on though. Except there was some excitement when there was suddenly an extraneous dog in the backyard. A medium sized one named Ranger, who had apparently come over to investigate the party. He seemed to like everyone, and Charlie and Annie didn't seem to mind. We eventually got ahold of his owner and he went on home.

Then it was Chicken Limbo time! Chicken Limbo is the easiest for me to get people to participate in. All I have to do is set it up, start the chicken squawking, and a line of people forms. Round by round the chicken was lowered, and people were eliminated. Eventually it came down to one simple fact - there's only one person small enough to limbo under a chicken 2 feet off the ground, Heather Chua.

After Chicken Limbo things started to quiet down, and the music eventually stopped. Matt Morgan, Jim, Jason Myers, Grant, Kasey, Dave Hill, and Sara were all going to Vegas the day after Super Prom, so they left a little early. This obviously had the effect of making things really quiet down. Then as it got later people started to put up tents in the backyard and going to bed. Dan and Lindsay had a ginormous tent for the 2 of them. Eventually it came down to about 10 of us hanging out in the gazebo. The kegs were kicked at that point so we were drinking the canned stuff, and most of the cigarettes were gone so we were smoking whatever we could find, there were a lot Winstons scattered around. Then at about 3 AM Glen finally showed up, last one there as always. So I think it was me, Glen, Ash, Melissa Barsamian, Ruth, Bill, and maybe Greg left, I forget who else. We hung out till about 5, then they all went off to get some food, and I pulled the Gazebo lights and went to bed.

The next day I felt completely miserable, apparently I had drank a lot and smoked a lot of cigarrettes the night before. I stayed in bed as long as possible, whoever spent the night over left while I was still in bed. Melissa did come in to say bye, and I haven't seen her since. I think I finally got up around 4 PM, not even thinking about thinking about ever doing that again.
